Iontophoresis: therapy details
Iontophoresis, therapy & details - why iontophoresis can help against sweating
When you begin your iontophoresis treatment, it is necessary to conduct daily treatments in the beginning. This phase is called the "initial therapy" face. Once you are successful, you will begin the so-called maintenance therapy phase. During the maintenance therapy, the pauses between the individual treatment sessions is prolonged to the maximum. If you have not achieved any success after an initial therapy phase of three weeks, it is time to go looking for errors.
Are there any incorrect settings? Is your iontophoresis device not suited for your purpose? Or are you one of the very few who cannot achieve success, no matter how hard they try?
On this page, we want to give a brief overview of our extensive reports on iontophoresis in order to present some simplified results. If you're looking for further details, please read the complete version on our iontophoresis page.
- First, the good news! Iontophoresis
- is a standard therapy for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- can easily be carried out on your own and at home (home therapy)
- is a recognized treatment method that is used by many dermatologists, dermatological clinics and university clinics
- requires little time: 1-2 sessions of 10-15 minutes per weeks should suffice for maintenance
- has few side effects when applied correctly
- is a non-invasive treatment (no surgery)
- involves no chemical substances
Iontophoresis is reversible. This means that the effect wears off once you stop performing the treatments.
This reversibility is both a big advantage and a small disadvantage.
The advantage is that there are no lasting effects on the body after the therapy has been stopped.
Some surgeries are still irreversible today. They cannot be undone. Possible side effects like Horner's syndrome (drooping eyelid) or CS (compensatory sweating) will most likely remain, even after the clamps have been removed from the nerve.
With iontophoresis, the reversibility is a big plus. Any small side effects that may occur when the therapy is performed incorrectly, such as dry skin, will fade once the therapy has been stopped.

Disadvantages of iontophoresis
The disadvantage is simple: as long as you sweat excessively, you must continue to carry out the iontophoresis treatment … full stop.
If the effect of iontophoresis were permanent (for example: one treatment, no sweat for the rest of your life), any side effects such as dry skin as a result of over-therapy would logically remain a lifelong presence. Dry skin can result in painful tears or calluses.
