Underarm sweat
Sweaty armpits - excessive underarm sweat
What is the quickest and best way to prevent armpit sweat and those notorious sweaty circles?
There is no shortage of good advice and methods to combat underarm sweat. Many tricks and tips are very popular, some are less known.
Assuming that the "normal" advice is known and has already been tried - more or less successfully -, one could assume that everyone reading this article either
- wants to find out information for friends, relatives, or acquaintances
- realised that the most popular remedies of choice, deodorants and antiperspirants, haven't helped
- or isn't sure whether they can trust the ingredients in antiperspirants and deodorants
Whichever one of these categories applies: So far nothing has really helped against sweating.
Correct?
Good thing that you found us!
We have a really good tip against sweaty armpits: iontophoresis against underarm sweat!
Iontophoresis for the underarms is performed by using special sponges. A low electric current affects the sweat glands. The aim is to prevent excessive sweating.
Iontophoresis is promising and has been used to counter underarm sweat for a long time.
Don't be afraid of electricity: With the right iontophoresis device, you're on the safe side, even under the armpits.
You can rent or buy suitable equipment from us
But there are other measures to prevent armpit sweat:
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the underarms
What are some other alternatives for iontophoresis? We have already listed some inexpensive alternatives. Here are a few comments and small tips on how to improve the situation:
Deodorants
A deodorant is usually relatively useless against excessive sweating, but you can use it to influence the smell. Tips for deodorants (deodorant tips)
Antiperspirants
Just like the deodorant - only the other way around. You can mix them (use them together or one after the other) (antiperspirant application)
(Total) Surgery
Oh dear - please get your information somewhere else, this is too much for us. This type of surgery is performed by scraping out the sweat glands or cutting away the areas that are affected by excessive sweating. These invasive interventions leave scars and aren't performed too regularly anymore - fortunately.
Sweat Gland Suction
The sweat gland suction is performed under anaesthesia.
It is a less severe form of the above-named surgery. Unfortunately, the sweat glands can reactivate after a while. This is a very expensive treatment method for underarm sweat.
Heating the sweat glands
Relatively expensive method, may have to be repeated several times.
Medication
Medication has a systemic effect on the body because it is taken orally. It is important to consider whether you want to accept the potential side effects such as drying out the mucous membranes (mouth, nose, and worst of all, genitals).
Injections
Yes, our good old friend neurotoxin. This works, is quite expensive and has to be repeated regularly (every 6-12 weeks).

Preventative measures against armpit sweat odors
Sweating and the smell of sweat can be prevented
Perfect hygiene is the best prerequisite against underarm sweat and the formation of odors
Cleanliness and thoroughness are a basic advantage - here are the simple rules:
- Keep armpit hair short, but do not use deodorant containing aluminum after shaving
- Wash thoroughly until no odor remains
- Use a sponge: A sponge is a relatively easy way to remove the smell of sweat.
- If there is still some residual smell, you can use disinfectant spray, or even better, disinfectant foam, to remove the smell of sweat as much as possible
- Of course, treatment with antiseptics also kills a variety of odor-causing bacteria
- Sanitary pads can be worn under the armpits in a close-fitting shirt to avoid large sweat stains
- Diluted iodine also works - it doesn't burn - but unfortunately it stains the skin slightly brownish. So don't use it in summer
- Change into a new shirt
- Wash yourself with washing powder - Liquid detergent is often not so suitable
- For some reason, dark clothes develop faster, more severe odors
Tips against sweaty and smelly armpits
Deodorant tips
If you use a roll-on deodorant, make sure not to contaminate the deodorant with bacteria and odor. Once contaminated, the deodorant quickly becomes smelly itself.
Instead of applying the deodorant directly to the skin, apply it to your fingers instead. Move the deodorant ball several times to create a thick layer. Then, apply the deodorant directly to your armpits with your hands.
Wash your hands well afterwards.
Alternatively: use a pump spray deodorant. Personally, we want to exclude deodorant sprays for reasons of environmental protection (propellant might contribute to the greenhouse effect) and the possibility of aerosol inhalation.
If your favorite deodorant doesn't come as a pump spray: get a pump container and dismantle the deodorant roller.
Take off the ball and fill the deodorant. The consistency is usually such that you can no longer spray it, but you can remove and apply the deodorant with your fingers as described above.
If you really want to spray: The deodorant can be diluted to the right consistency with water or a light alcohol solution.
Antiperspirant tips
The same as with deodorant: Apply in a targeted manner, preferably with your finger.
Do not apply an antiperspirant to freshly shaved skin.
Apply the antiperspirant before going to bed. Many people don't sweat as much at this time, i.e. just before they go to sleep.
