Sweaty feet
In the realm of sweaty feet, a true sweat-killer would be just the thing we need, spoke King Sweat-Foot the First and invented the foot deodorant.
Even though our headline on the subject of sweaty feet might be a bit flippant - if it were truly that easy, it would be easy. A deodorant is usually not very effective on the feet. It does not reduce sweat and hardly covers unpleasant smells.
Let us thus take a systematic look at the successful and rather promising treatment options for sweaty feet.
Some of our tips are free and easy to use. Others, especially established therapies against sweating, come at a relatively high price. But depending on the severity of your suffering, a good solution to the problem is well worth "all the money in the world".
Hyperhidrosis pedum (Sweaty feet)
Sweaty feet: when the feet sweat too much.
Excessive sweat develops a moist environment in your shoes. This combination of warmth and wetness leads to strong odours.
Damp shoes should always be allowed to dry. For this purpose, you might want to carry an extra pair of shoes during the day.
Foot sweat and sweaty foot odour
The infamous odour of sweat is familiar to anyone in all its unpleasant variations.
Natural materials have an advantage over many synthetic fabrics. Socks and shoes made from natural materials can help relieve some of the smell.
Don't use damp shoes that haven't had a chance to dry yet. Walking around in wet shoes accelerates all the undesirable processes of foot sweat, including personal discomfort and the build-up of odour.
When home remedies do not help
Unfortunately, these tips don't help in many cases. If you want to really confront the problem of foot odour, you must regulate/reduce the level of sweating. Iontophoresis can be a simple and thorough solution against sweaty feet, since iontophoresis tackles the root of the cause (hyperhidrosis).
Antiperspirants
Unfortunately, antiperspirants are often too weak for highly sweaty feet.
Iontophoresis against sweaty feet
Have you heard of iontophoresis?
Probably not. Iontophoresis is rather unknown to many - and some people are quickly deterred by the rather high costs of iontophoresis machines.
Iontophoresis is used primarily on the feet. This treatment can significantly reduce sweat and thus help to eliminate unpleasant odours. The chances of success are high to very high.
Reasonably good devices will hardly be sold for under 300 EUR. In the price range of 400 to 700 EUR, however, you can easily get good to very good iontophoresis devices for the feet.
We offer a trial run and a money-back-guarantee on our iontophoresis devices. You will be charged only for the consumables used during the test period: electrodes for hand/feet (70 EUR) as well as all options and accessories (for the price shown at the time of purchase)!
Renting an iontophoresis device is a particularly popular way to test the therapy. It is possible that the iontophoresis treatment can be stopped after a few months. In this case, you can return your rented device. Rent an iontophoresis device here.

Preventative measures against sweaty feet
Sweat can be stopped
Perfect foot hygiene is the best prevention against sweaty, smelly feet.
Basic cleanliness is a big advantage. Make sure to follow these simple rules:
- Keep the toenails short
- Wear fresh socks
- Wash and care for your feet thoroughly
- Take care of your nail beds
- Clean between the toes
- Dry your feet before wearing shoes
- Dry and air out your shoes
- Wear leather or other natural materials
- Always use fresh towels after washing. Foot sweat is caused by large amounts of bacteria. Using clean towels prevents you from reapplying bacteria to your feet.
- Natron foot baths can be very helpful against stubbornly smelly feet. If need be, simply rub your feet with natron and sprinkle some natron into your shoes/socks before you begin your day.

Foot sweat and smelly feet are not one and the same
Foot sweat and sweaty feet refer to the same phenomenon, which is sweating of the feet. However, the difference between the two terms lies in the words themselves: sweat on the one hand, smell on the other.
Both can be related, but they may occur independently of each other. For this reason, there are various remedies and recipes against foot sweat and foot odour.
Foot sweat is a common problem that occurs when the sweat glands in the feet produce excess moisture.
"Foot sweat" refers to the fact that the feet sweat and produce moisture.
Sweaty feet occur as a consequence of foot sweat. This happens when the sweat is trapped inside your socks and shoes. This process can lead to extremely unpleasant odours and swampy feet.
The term "sweaty feet" emphasizes the effects of foot sweat on the well-being of the sufferer. Often, the feet may smell so bad that the odour penetrates the shoes and permeates the environment.
However, sweaty feet do not always go hand in hand with damp feet. Most people who are affected by smelly feet don't necessarily sweat too much.
Sometimes a bit of moisture is enough to get the process of foot smell going. Bacteria thrive in a warm, wet environment.
In practice, two terms are often used interchangeably to describe the problem of excessive sweating of the feet on the one hand and the phenomenon of smelly sweaty feet on the other.
Sweaty feet + foot odour = "cheesy" feet
Sweaty feet can cause problems, especially when accompanied by odour. When feet sweat, bacteria can grow and sometimes explode, resulting in an unpleasant smell.
Not only can this be uncomfortable, but it can also lead to self-esteem issues and social isolation.
Smelly feet
The stronger the sweat, the more measures you might have to take to eliminate it.
There are several precautions you can take to avoid or minimize sweaty feet:
- Wear breathable shoes and socks made from natural materials like cotton or wool.
- Silver fibre socks can be extremely useful.
- Change your socks daily and wash them in hot water.
- Don't wear shoes two days in a row.
- Use shoe deodorants and foot powder to reduce odour.
- Wash your feet daily and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. Clean the nail bed and under the toenails and keep the nails trimmed.
- Use antibacterial soaps and lotions.
- Better to wash once more.
- Avoid synthetic shoes and socks as they can promote sweating.
- If you sweat excessively, you can use special shoe inserts that absorb moisture, then let them dry overnight.
- Mixing baking soda into a thick paste and leaving it on the smelly areas of skin (preferably overnight) can reduce and even eliminate the problem of sweaty feet. This is a good tip, especially if the skin is damaged by sweat.
- Put baking soda on the soles of your shoes - fine powder is better than granular baking soda.
If the above measures do not help, or you have excessively sweaty feet, you should consult a doctor or dermatologist.
Tablets / Drugs / Chemicals / Antiperspirants
Your doctor certainly has a few tricks up their sleeve and may be of help. We must therefore mention pills and medicines against sweating. As mentioned above, antiperspirants are often useless for sweaty feet.
Cost-intensive - Expensive, but helpful and ideally suited in many cases
In some cases, a medical treatment called iontophoresis may be required to treat sweaty feet properly. Iontophoresis is often the only and last option for a significant reduction of foot sweat.
